Abstract:

Aim

The aim is to share the long and impressive history of a children’s hospital started in 1852 with ten beds and the sole aim of looking after sick children. In the early years, patients were local children and treated in shared wards for a wide variety of conditions, from serious illnesses like bronchitis, phthisis and syphilis to minor ailments like catarrh. The hospital has grown to building houses 25 wards, specialist clinical investigations units, state-of-the-art operating theatres. These facilities allow the hospital to treat more children, provide additional privacy and comfort for patients and their families, and make their stay as stress-free as possible.

Method

The presentation will be a walk through time describing the history of children’s nursing developments aligned to the growth of the hospital and breakthroughs in medical and surgical treatments.

Results

The audience will learn how children’s nursing care provision has thrived in this specialist environment for sick children and how in 2016 continues to innovate with developing new learning programmes e.g. for newly qualified staff and non-registered healthcare staff.

Conclusions

Caring for sick children and young people and their families is a privilege and the nursing team here at Great Ormond Street Hospital take great joy and pride in the care and support provided every day. There are some wonderful anecdotes to share and a celebration of how nursing has strengthened and developed in the last 170 years.
