Abstract:

Aim

It is undeniable that health systems with strong primary health care (PHC) are more efficient, reduce hospitalisation, limit health inequalities and improve health outcomes. Predictions around insufficient employment opportunities for newly graduating nurses and nursing workforce shortfalls demand efforts to improve the recruitment and retention of PHC nurses. Caring for children and young people is a role of many PHC nurses and a proportion of specialist children and young people’s nurses work in this setting.

APNA is developing an Education and Career Framework and Toolkit, funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health, to improve employment opportunities and build capacity in the PHC workforce.

Through collaboration with professional nursing organisations representing nurses working in a variety of PHC settings, the Framework will describe a range of PHC career pathways and their education underpinnings.

Method

Extensive consultation will articulate the core skills and knowledge representing the roles of nurses working in primary health care, including those caring for children and young people. This will form the foundation of the Framework, which will be relevant to all primary health care nurses. A toolkit will be developed to support the implementation of the Framework.

Results

An update on the process of reaching consensus around the core skills and knowledge of primary health care nurses will be provided. The application to nurses caring for children and young people will be discussed.

Conclusions

The Framework will enhance education opportunities and career progression for nurses caring for children and young people based in PHC settings.
