ACCYPN Update Competencies, Standards of Practice and Credentialing

Wednesday, 11th June 2014

ACCYPN had in the strategic plan for 2011-2014 a revision of the ACPCHN Competencies and to contribute to the development of a national credentialing framework for nurses. As you are aware an Expression of Interest was called for to develop Standards of Practice to replace the ACPCHN Competencies. This work will commence in the next month and a call for members to be involved in that process has been sent out.

In May 2014 ACCYPN had an offer from the Nursing and Midwifery Office, Queensland Health (NMOQ) to participate in the development of a common credentialing framework for six national Colleges. The NMOQ has engaged the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) to lead and co-ordinate this project.

The six Colleges involved are:
• Australian College of Mental Health Nurses
• Australian College of Children and Young People’s Nurses
• Australian College of Operating Room Nurses
• College of Emergency Nursing Australia
• Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia
• Palliative Care Nurses Australia

This project will draw on the work completed by the Coalition of National Nursing Organisations (2006) which included an evidence based framework for credentialing. The clinical content for credentialing will be speciality specific but the framework will be the same across all Colleges. This process has commenced and two Directors (Rosie MacLeavy and Jan Pratt) will represent ACCYPN during this process. This process is due for completion in July 2014. As part of the project ACMHN is required to deliver to Queensland Health a proposed implementation plan.

At the ACCYPN Conference 20-21st October in Cairns, we aim to announce the process that will be available for Children and Young People’s Nurses nationwide to become credentialed. This information will also be communicated through the bi-monthly newsletter and emails to members.
Kind regards
