Invitation for Member Feedback – Position Statement: Planetary Health and Its Impact on Infants, Children, and Young People

The ACCYPN invites member feedback on our new Position Statement: Planetary Health and Its Impact on Infants, Children, and Young People.

This position statement reflects the ACCYPN’s recognition of planetary health as a critical determinant of child health outcomes. It aligns with the International Council of Nurses’ (2024) assertion that climate change poses a significant threat to global health. Nurses have a vital role in both mitigating climate change and supporting adaptation by developing relevant clinical skills and engaging in advocacy.

Planetary health describes the interdependence between human health and the natural systems on which we rely. The accelerating climate crisis and ongoing environmental degradation are impacting health through multiple pathways. Infants, children, and young people are uniquely vulnerable to these threats due to:

·        Their developing organs and immune systems

·        Higher metabolic rates and greater proportional exposure to toxins

·        Longer life expectancy, increasing risk of chronic disease over time

·        Dependence on caregivers for protection, nutrition, and wellbeing

·        Limited power to influence the environments in which they live

We value your insights and invite your feedback to ensure the position statement is robust, relevant, and representative of our collective commitment to children and young people’s health.

Please provide feedback by COB Wed 3rd September 2025 to secretary@accypn.org.au
