CHAIRPERSON’S LETTER

Dear Members

Welcome to the December edition of Communique.

In 2022 our benefits to members continues to increase with our affiliation to ACN https://www.accypn.org.au/ and the extensive support this provides to our members. 2022 has been another busy year for the College and for all our members. The ongoing impact of COVID and the move of the states and country to the new ‘COVID normal’. On a brighter note, the College has had some fantastic outcomes including the ACCYPN Conference, the development of policies, and our new strategic plan. These activities guide the College going forward to ensure our success for our members.

The Journal of Children & Young People’s Health  continues to publish peak Australasian scholarly articles for neonatal care, paediatrics, children, and young peoples’ health. The journal promotes articles from paediatric nurses’ and allied health professionals promoting evidence-based, high quality care of children, young people, and their families. The journal represents the diverse range of, expertise, skill, and quality of care provided in neonate, paediatric, children and young people’s care, irrespective of the setting.  Please share this link with your colleagues https://journals.cambridgemedia.com.au/jcyph.

We continue to expand the library of on-line learning available with the Webinars https://www.accypn.org.au/webinars/ with the recordings available in the Members Portal accessable via the Knowledge Centre / Learning on Demand https://www.accypn.org.au/knowledge-centre/learning-on-demand/. You will find other useful professional information in the Knowledge Centre including the Standards of Practice, Credentialing, Education and Funding Opportunities, and a new Resources repository – containing information, caring for paediatric patients and links on cyber-safety. I encourage you to browse and share this link with your colleagues http://www.accypn.org.au/knowledge-centre/.

The Directors act as representatives for all members of the College, and I invite you to contact us any time you have feedback, or an issue you would like to raise – email info@accypn.org.au. We look forward to continuing to represent you in professional nursing issues and advocacy for children and young people’s health throughout 2023.

On behalf of the Board, I wish you and your families and friends a joyous and safe Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Warm regards

WA CHAPTER REPORT

WA Chapter Breakfast – The Challenges of an On-Line World
The WA Chapter held our last event for the year on Saturday 3 December 2022, and what a great event it was! Great speakers, fantastic raffle, and recognition of Leanne Goughs generous contribution to the ACCYPN both in WA and nationally on the Board for many years.  We returned to Kailis Bros restaurant in Leederville, a fantastic venue, great food, great staff! And we must thanks Lactalis for sponsoring the event, their continued support allows us to run events at a discounted rate for our members.

The theme of the event was “The Challenges of an On-Line World’. We had two fantastic speakers Bec Nguyen (who capably stepped in for Prof Donna Cross who was not able to attend) and Krisi McVee. Our kids have never known a world without devices. Both speakers provided context and identified the risks and great tips and advice to keep our children safe.

Bec Nguyen was previously the Digital Projects Manager with the Health Promotion and Education Research team at Telethon Kids Institute (TKI). During which time the Beacon app was developed and launched.

Beacon aims to improve the digital future for Australian children by building parents’ and carers’ digital skills so they can confidently navigate their children’s use of digital technology in a positive way and minimise potential harms associated with being online.

The Beacon app integrates seamlessly into parents’ daily lives, delivering the most trusted and up-to-date information backed by behavioural science research, as well as personalised support, ideas and strategies at their fingertips to navigate the ever-changing online world.

For more information visit https://beacon.telethonkids.org.au/ or scan the QR code below.

Our second presenter was Kristi McVee, a former detective and Specialist Child Interviewer.

In July this year Kristi released a book ‘Operation KidSafe – A Definitive Guide for Parents to Help your Child to Thrive (Not Just Survive) as they Grow Up.’ She shared her ‘must-have’ tips, advice and lessons acquired during her career as a police officer where she interviewed adult and child victims and investigated child sexual abuse cases.

Kristi’s book is available for purchase at admin@cape-au.com

On a lighter note, thanks to the generous donations from HESTA, Lactalis, Kailis Bros, Nespresso, Faber winery, Dome, Nutrimetics, ABC Chiropractic and many more we had a fabulous raffle, everyone left with at least one gift and a big smile!

We were also pleased to present Leanne Gough with Life membership in recognition of contribution the ACCYPN. Leanne has been a stalwart of the college, an active member of the WA Chapter, organising and especially catering of our events, and member of the Board of Directors for three terms. We wish her well in her retirement, I am sure we will continue to se ever at our events.

The WA chapter will resume Clinical Suppers in 2023, along with the Midyear Dinner and Annual Breakfast, what this space. Any members that would like to join the WA Chapter working group please contact Pam at secretary@accypn.org.au

Come and join us for the 2023 ACCYPN Conference, from 13 – 15 September 2023 at the Hilton in Darwin!

Call for Abstracts open Friday 16 December 2022.

The aim of the Conference is for us to reflect on and look at how we adapted to the global pandemic.

  • How did providing care to the children, young people and families have to change?
  • What worked, what did not, how have our services changed?
  • What did we learn about looking after ourselves and our colleagues during this time?
  • What have we learnt about self-care and adapting to a fast-moving situation and information overload?
  • What will children and young people’s health look like in the future and how can we look at shaping this future.

The Conference theme is ‘The New Age of Children and Young People’s Healthcare’

Come and share your experiences, insights and learn from others. Help shape the future of care for children and young people.

Conference Outline:

Wednesday 13 September 2023Masterclasses and Welcome Reception

Thursday 14 September 2023Conference Sessions & ACCYPN AGM

Free evening to watch the sunset and have dinner at the iconic Mindil Markets.

Friday 15 September 2023 – Conference Sessions and Conference Dinner

The College is very excited to welcome everyone back to a face-to-face format for this Conference.  The last two years has been different and stressful for many health care workers and the population around the world.  With our last Conference having to be a fully virtual Conference, we missed the opportunities to meet with old colleagues and make new ones. Let’s reconnect in Darwin, check in with each other and see how we are all going.

Reconnect, revisit and relax in what Darwin has to offer.

Please register your Expression of Interest via the below QR code.

Make sure you are connected to the ACCYPN on our social networking sites:

We are designing the program so you can get the most out of your NT Experience by arriving early, experiences during the Conference or staying after the Conference to exploring Darwin and NT.

SURVEY TO EXPLORE NURSES CONNECTION WITH FAMILY

Nurses attitudes toward the importance of families and perceived outcomes of family involvement in nursing care study

You are being invited to participate in a study exploring your attitudes towards the importance of families in nursing care.

Family is the main source of support when facing health adversity, although the family support persons often go unrecognised within the health system. Research highlights that family involvement in care is often beneficial for the patient and family. The term family refers to the patient/client and family members, friends, neighbours or significant others.

Participation in the study will involve the completion of an online survey [approximately 20 mins] asking about your attitude towards the importance of families in nursing care.  Click here to begin the survey.
