CHAIRPERSON’S LETTER

Dear Members

Welcome to the first edition of Communique in 2020.

This month I’d like to update you on a few of the key priorities for the College in the coming year.

The Board met on February 1st for a planning session where we reviewed the current Strategic Plan and developed key actions for the year ahead. Top of the priority list is College membership, the new Journal and Credentialing. We have seen a significant decline in new and renewing memberships over recent times. Recruitment and retention of members is not an issue for our College alone as many other smaller professional associations are also finding this a challenge. We value our members and strive to inform, support and involve members in the College activities. We are committed to providing you value for money and for you to have the opportunity to be active in a professional body that advocates strongly for children, young people and the nurses who care for them. However, declining numbers is a significant issue for the financial sustainability of the College. Membership fees are our main source of income along with the bi-annual conference. The Board has identified some activities such as promotional events at conferences, workplace staff forums and education events, and to nursing students through University events. I would like to ask you to look for opportunities where you can promote the College in your own workplace and through your professional networks. If every member could sign up just one member we would off to a flying start in re-building our membership base.

“NO ONE can do everything, but EVERYONE can do something” (Author unknown)

Also a quick update on the new Journal. We have an agreement in place with the publisher – Cambridge Media, and have appointed Dr Yvonne Parry as Journal Editor and Dr Robyn Penny Associate Editor. A second recruitment round is in progress for Associates including an Associate from the Asia Pacific Nurses Association. We aim to be calling for submissions very soon for the first publication in 2020.

Regards
Catherine Marron

DEAR MINDS CAMPAIGN
Queensland’s first positive mental health and wellbeing campaign, Dear Mind

About Dear Mind

The Dear Mind campaign, which launched on TV, in cinema and across digital channels on 12 January, is the first of its kind in Queensland. Unlike previous campaigns which focused on mental illness, Dear Mind encourages all Queensland adults to prioritise their mental wellbeing and create a healthier relationship with their mind through simple, daily activities.

Evidence has shown that positive mental wellbeing can help prevent behavioural and mental health problems and act as an important ‘buffer’ to the risk of mental illness. Dear Mind shows people what positive mental health and wellbeing looks like and encourages them to build their resilience and ability to cope with life’s challenges.

Dear Mind is underpinned by extensive market research which indicated the need for a campaign to promote activities that can improve mental wellbeing and prevent mental health issues from arising. While many Queenslanders are already taking steps to look after their body and mind, they can always be doing more.

People can visit the Queensland Government Mental Wellbeing website for inspiration and practical ways to improve their mental wellbeing.

How you can help?

We want the Dear Mind campaign to benefit as many Queenslanders as possible, so I am seeking your support to share the campaign materials on your own communication channels and, in addition, share the attached stakeholder kit with your networks to spread the word to their members, patients, and communities.

The stakeholder kit includes newsletter articles, social media posts and a link to approved images.

Whether you influence the lives of five or 5,000, your help will be invaluable in building the resilience of all Queenslanders.
