Parents often ask, "Is this normal?" As clinicians, one of our greatest challenges is distinguishing between normal newborn behaviour and the early signs of serious illness. This presentation will explore the common presentations seen in the community, the red flags that shouldn't be missed, and when it's time to escalate care.

Jenn is an endorsed Nurse Practitioner with more than 24 years of experience in WA Health. With a background in tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care, she has expertise in neonatal resuscitation, intensive care, advanced neonatal assessment, and neonatal retrieval medicine, and has held senior clinical, leadership, and education roles throughout her career. Passionate about education, Jenn has delivered advanced neonatal resuscitation and simulation-based training to medical and nursing staff across metropolitan and regional Western Australia and continues to enjoy teaching, mentoring, and supporting workforce development.
Since becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she has worked across both Primary Health Care and Emergency Medicine, with clinical interests in infant and perinatal mental health, feeding and growth concerns, neurodevelopment, and the assessment and management of neonatal and infant presentations in acute care. She enjoys the diversity of Emergency Medicine and is continuing to expand her expertise in injury management and acute medical presentations while drawing on her extensive neonatal and primary care experience. Jenn also contributes to the Emergency Department Postgraduate Certificate program and collaborates with WAPEM to deliver neonatal and infant urgent care education across Western Australia.
