Abstract:

The National ForWhen Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Care Navigation Service 

In Australia, an estimated one in five mothers, and one in ten fathers/non-birth partners, experience perinatal mental health (PIMH) issues with flow-on effects to parenting quality, parent-infant relationships, and child development.

Many parents do not access the PIMH or early parenting support due to system-level barriers including fragmentation, lack of appropriate services, stigma, and service navigation difficulties.

ForWhen is a commonwealth funded service that has been implemented by Karitane, the Australasian Association of Parenting and Child Health, Parenting Research Centre (PRC), and University of New South Wales (UNSW).

The ForWhen service commenced in February 2022 and through the national PIMH care navigation phone line, supports parents, family members and health professionals to connect with appropriate mental health services locally, nationally, and through evidence-based digital therapy programs and peer networks.
This presentation explains the ForWhen service.

Presenters BIO:

Megan Leuenberger National Director PIMH

Megan has an interest in system thinking and service design including solution focused service modelling to suit the needs of families.

She has a keen interest in infant mental health and building parenting confidence and capability, Megan has a Master’s Degree Public Health & Degree Health Science, is a Registered Nurse and Midwife and CFHN with additional qualifications and has worked in several executive positions across the country.  Megan was Chief Nurse in Victoria for Child and Family Health Nurses and DON / Community Services for an Early Parenting Hospital among other career highlights.
