Abstract: Connecting2u (C2u) is a universal health promotion intervention that supports parents and carers through regular SMS text messaging. This platform combines the technology of mobile phones with targeted health promotion strategies to support positive behavioural choices. The purpose of C2u is to provide parents and carers with important knowledge, skills, and resources to positively impact on parenting practices and parental health behaviours.

Griffith University were the academic partner in the evaluation of the first three iterations of the C2u program. Across iterations, first-time mothers reported statistically significant results impacting “increasing parental confidence”. The service also demonstrated positive results impacting parental health literacy; parental self-efficacy to access the health care system; and effective implementation of strategies to promote optimal health and development in the early years.

Parents and carers participating in the most recent iteration reported a 100% immunisation rate at 2 years of age. This is vital in preventing childhood communicable disease. A 99% satisfaction rate with breadth of topics highlights the service is meeting the perceived needs of new parents with information about topics they find relevant.

Timely reminders about accessing child health and support services (such as for immunisation and developmental health checks) maintains connections between families and health services. This ongoing connection is vital in providing the right service at the right time and preventing minor issues from developing into complex problems. Over 90% of participants reported that the reminders were timely and a valuable prompt for accessing services at the right time.

Consideration of health literacy levels in the design and implementation has been a critical element of the program. The process for developing and expanding the suite of messages has been multi-tiered and has involved a network of health professional content expertise; phases of community consultation and stakeholder engagement and guidance from key national bodies to ensure effective framing of the messages.

Now in its’ 4th iteration, Connecting2u (C2u) is celebrating its’ 10th year of supporting new parents in their early parenting journey. With each iteration, refinements to the design and delivery of the program have been implemented to scale-up the program to a greater geographical reach throughout Queensland. An expansion of the program has recently been launched to support Queensland parents of children aged from birth until five years old (previously up to two years old).

The program is managed by the Centre for Children’s Health and Wellbeing (CCHW), Children’s Health Queensland, with the evaluation conducted by Griffith University. This presentation will provide an overview of the program and learnings throughout the journey.

Presenter: Alanna Phillipson is the Principal Program Officer managing Connecting2u. Connecting2u is a universal health promotion program to support new parents during their early parenting journey (birth [1] five yrs). Alanna has been a member of the team since 2013, and holds postgraduate qualifications in Public Health and Perinatal & Infant Mental Health. Alanna has a passion for being a part of public health efforts that are grounded in reducing health inequities. She has been very fortunate to have led and participated in multiple and varied innovative health promotion and prevention interventions, approaches and research, that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of children and families. Alanna enjoys travelling with her husband and daughter, and any chance to do some yoga or Pilates between coffees and wines!

  • The experience of infants and young children – what they perceive and are aware of and what their hospital experience can be like.
  • Looking at how much infants can do, what they are capable of and aware of and therefore how they experience hospitalisation, medical procedures etc.
  • Exploring this through the experience of parents, and how this also impacts the infant.
  • Trauma / PTSD / medical trauma in infants, how it presents in hospital and the aftermath – how these hospital experiences / medical complexity or long admission after birth can continue to impact the child and family into the future.
  • What we can do to reduce these risks and support an infant / toddler’s mental health.
  • Some case studies to demonstrate how we can make a difference

Presenter: Helena is a clinical psychologist working in the infant mental health team at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. NATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RARE DISEASE HEALTH CARE

Available now!

Australia’s first-ever National Recommendations for Rare Disease Health Care (the Recommendations) were launched in February and provide guidance for health professionals caring for people living with rare disease. As highlighted by the Global Nursing Network for Rare Diseases, all nurses at some point in their career will care for someone affected by a rare or undiagnosed disease. This may be a rare genetic condition like Angelman syndrome, or a rare cancer, autoimmune condition, or infection.
The eight recommendations provide nurses with up-to-date knowledge about caring for people living with rare disease, and highlight useful services, resources, and further educational opportunities. Extensive consultation with people living with rare disease ensure that the Recommendations align with their key priorities and are person-centered and strengths based.
The Recommendations were developed as part of the Australian Government-funded Rare Disease Awareness, Education, Support and Training (RArEST) Project and have been endorsed by Rare Voices Australia, the national peak body for people living with a rare disease, and 10 national colleges and bodies, including the ACCYPN, the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), and the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA). They have also been officially recognised as an Accepted Clinical Resource by The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

HELP IMPROVE HPV VACCINATION RATES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY

Having the HPV vaccine is an important way to protect against HPV-related diseases such as cervical cancer, other HPV-related cancers and genital warts.

Although vaccinations are important, they can be stressful, and there are sometimes unique barriers for people with disability. In Victoria, HPV vaccination coverage for children with disability is lower than the rest of their peers, putting them at greater risk of HPV-related cancers and diseases.

With funding provided by the Victorian Department of Health, Cancer Council Victoria in consultation with Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and Scope Australia, has developed new resources to improve the vaccination experience for young people with disability and their parents/carers, including a fact sheet, animation and social story.

For more information and to access these resources, visit Cancer Council’s HPV vaccine website: hpvvaccine.org.au/disability

ACCYPN are selling ‘A Time to Remember’ via our website on behalf of the Author Janet H Henry.

‘A Time to Remember’ is the first comprehensive descriptive account of the history of the Infant Welfare/Child Health Service in Queensland, Australia.  It traces the development of the service from 1918 to 1991.  It tells the story of a service born out of a world-wide concern about high infant and maternal mortality.  The journey began with a conference in France in 1905, following which several new initiatives emerged around the world.  It was during this time that the work of Sir Truby King (New Zealand) became Known.  Australia was interested in his teachings and “baby clinics” began opening. It was not until March 1918 that the first clinic opened in Brisbane in Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley.

The author has carefully researched and presented this compelling story of service that grew from humble beginnings to become one of the largest preventive health networks for families in the state.  It elevates the discipline of child health nursing and the courage, survival in the face of adversity, sacrifice, and above all of determination and success in taking services to mothers, babies and families in some of the most remote areas of the state. The book includes a series of engaging and touching stories of child health nurses, past and present, and photographs that provide a personal touch to the valuable historical content.

Cost – $40.00 (includes postage and handling within Australia)
