WA CHAPTER REPORT

The WA Chapter has planned our first event for 2019: It is on Tuesday March 5th at 16:45 for a 17:00 start. The venue is the Auditorium, Level 5 at Perth Children’s Hospital. The talk is titled: The Transformed Landscape of Childhood Brain Tumours and is presented by Dr Nick Gottardo, the Co-Head Brain Tumour Research Team and Consultant Paediatric Oncologist/Neuro-Oncologist.

The Committee is in the process of planning other events for 2019 and we trust they will be as enjoyable as previous year’s suppers and breakfasts.

Again, our thanks to everyone who has made suggestions for future events. We will share the findings of the survey we conducted in the latter part of 2018 in the next newsletter, but we are pleased to announce that we did recruit two new committee members: Jade Ferullo and Tanya Svilicich. I’m sure you will share with us our thanks and welcome to Jade and Tanya.

Finally, thanks again to all members for your continued support.

GETTING CHILDREN TO SCHOOL IS NOT EASY RIDE FOR PARENTS

Research shows seven in ten Australian school children almost never walk or ride to school and the main worries parents have about independent travel relate to the safety of their child.  Read more key findings here.

POLL REPORT

Most Australian school children are being driven to school, Dr Anthea Rhodes’ latest report explores the physical benefits of active travel and the role it plays in developing independence.  Read the full report here.

VIDEO: A SNAPSHOT OF THE FINDINGS

In this video, Dr Anthea Rhodes explores how active travel to school has both physical and mental benefits and offers positive parenting tips on ways to incorporate active travel into your week. Watch it here.

RELEASE TOOLKIT – ‘TALKING THE TALK: LISTENING TO FAMILY STORIES – SUPPORTING CHILDREN TO PLAY AND LEARN’

The ‘Talking the Talk’ Toolkit is a resource developed by the Child Development Program, Children’s Health Queensland, in collaboration and consultation with health professionals, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and Indigenous services.

The resource aims to help professional and community health workers to establish engagement and connection with the families they serve.  The toolkit provides a booklet with easy to follow steps that child’s strengths and challenges, as well as support care planning and promote children’s development through play and learning.

The booklet also provides development milestones (6 months to 5 years) as a guide to engage families’ awareness in their children’s development and progress.  The toolkit also contains:

  • Five (5) posters (four (4) on developmental domains and one on ‘Create a healthy family plan’) that can be printed on A3 format and used as a general information in waiting areas or other gathering places.
  • Two (2) templates, aimed to facilitate engagement with the family in a non-confronting way.  The ‘Child Development Summary’ – for gathering information by the health worker and ‘My Child’s Development Plan’ – for setting up a care plan in collaboration with the family.  These templates can be photocopied as needed.

Downloaded versions of the Toolkit (booklet, posters and templates) can be found online – click here.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING TO SHAPE AUSTRALIA’S CHILD HEALTH POLICY!

Your input is greatly appreciated.  The content of the draft Action Plan is complete and work to structure and prioritise activity is underway.

We understand the Department of Health will soon provide information in relation to future consultations.  We will advise when the consultation is live and hope that you will take this opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas on how we can best support the health of Australia’s children.

Any questions that you may have, please click here to contact Aracy.

The Academy of Child and Adolescent Health (ACAH) is excited to host its 2019 Conference in Adelaide, South Australia at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, 17 to 19 October 2019.
