Abstract:

Aim: To provide an insight into patient centred care and decision making from a parent‘s perspective Method: This is a case review of a parent’s perspective of the experience when her five year old was seriously injured in a car accident and hospitalised for almost seven weeks. The mother a maternity consumer representative remembered the connection between birthing women feeling uninformed/ unsafe during their care and the increased likelihood of them developing PND/PTSD.  Wanting to minimize the possibility of short and long term psychological trauma for her daughter the mother  advocated for the daughter to be informed and at the centre of the decision making surrounding her care.  Result: The mother has reflected on family’s journey, and will explore the question “When it comes to patient-centred care, what are the key priorities for consumers?”.  The mother will place patient- centred care within a context of national and state reform including the National Safety and Quality Healthcare Standards.  She will also provide links to resources which support service providers to provide patient-centred care and empower parents to advocate for patient-centred care for their children. Take home message: Patient centered care can work in practice
