Abstract:
AIM:
To identify child health staffs and parents/carers experiences and perceptions of the impact of the use of the Family Partnership Model (FPM) in creating reflective practice discussions and improved client care.
METHOD:
The sample included child health professionals (nurses and Early Intervention Parenting Specialists (EIPS)) as well as parents/carers within families with complex needs. Several methods were utilised including: survey, focus group and interview. Staff were included in both the survey and focus group, while parents/carers participated in the telephone interview.
RESULTS:
The survey and focus groups provided information regarding the usefulness of the FPM worksheets in improving reflective discussions during care review meetings. Staff’s experience utilising the FPM with complex clients was also explored. Parents/carers reported experiences when child health professionals incorporated aspects of the principles of the FPM in their interactions with their family.
CONCLUSION:
The importance of utilising the FPM, reflective practice approach in complex care review discussions to improve and sustain the parent/carer-helper relationship and promote best child health practices with better health outcomes for children and their families.
Staff are provided with a structured process when discussing vulnerable children allowing them to potentially cope better with the increasing numbers of complex and vulnerable families.
