Abstract:

Aim

The future focus of health care is on primary care. It is important that nursing education reflects this to ensure student nurses are prepared to practice in the various clinical environments with the necessary theoretical knowledge and clinical skills. Universities are constantly looking for opportunities to enhance clinical education for undergraduate students. Historically, acute care settings have been used, with minimal paediatric placements being available. An innovative collaborative clinical education model was designed to support student knowledge and skills in a paediatric community setting. The model positioned the students to be exposed to children who have chronic renal disease, and further offered a range of experiences and mixed learning opportunities. This clinical education model provided a unique opportunity for positive and valuable quality paediatric learning experiences.

Method

Following the implementation of the model, a phenomenological research was undertaken. A triangulated method was utilised in order to explore the student’s lived experience within this paediatric clinical education placement. These were face to face interviews, focus groups and questionnaires.

Results

Using thematic analysis, themes that evolved from student responses revealed a positive view of the paediatric population, complexity of paediatric nursing care, collegiality, teamwork and chronic illness implications for children and their families.

Conclusions

The results have indicated that this model of learning offers effective learning processes within a community setting, where the learning is meaningful to students. It is envisaged that this model will revolutionise nursing clinical placements in the future. This presentation will discuss the innovative clinical education model and results of the research.
