Abstract:

AIM:   Provide paediatric nurses with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the impact of 10+ years of war and learn about unique risk factors with children and adolescents from the United States.

METHOD:   Oral presentation of research on military children and military families will be given highlighting numerous studies performed in the United States (U.S.). Results of these studies will be discussed along with the common emerging themes from quantitative and qualitative analysis. Gaps in the U.S. system of health care will be identified.

RESULTS:   Research on the impact of 10+ years of war is limited on military families and their children. Studies show: resilience is important with maintaining wellbeing; communication plays a role in outcomes; there are emerging signs of stress; and gaps in access to care impact timely treatment.

CONCLUSION:   Studies find U.S. military families are generally physically and psychologically healthy. More research is needed to understand the impact of war and its long-term impact as children grow up into adulthood and become parents. Recommendations for the establishment of innovative nursing practice in hospital, clinical, and community care settings to improve the quality and access to care will be discussed.
