Abstract:

In 2011, the national Census revealed that over a quarter (26%) of Australia’s population was born overseas and an additional one fifth (20%) had at least one parent born in another country. Our wealth of national diversity means that it is essential for health professionals to be able to work well across cultures to ensure the best possible outcomes for our children, young people and their families. But how is cultural diversity relevant to mental health practice? And what does working well mean?  This session will explore the status of mental health for children and young people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds (CALD) including those from refugee backgrounds, and review the specific protective and risk factors for this cohort. It will also discuss the important task that systems and services have in working collaboratively together in the pursuit of positive mental health outcomes. It will also give examples of how the diverse ‘village’ supporting the mental health of children and young people can indeed ‘play nicely’ together
