 Abstract

Aim

The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate the value of the inclusion of paediatric nursing in the comprehensive Bachelor of Nursing (BN). The exposure of students to the child, adolescent and family nursing unit, at an UG level, through the alignment of theory and practice, enhances the preparation of quality nurses for recruitment and employment in a future paediatric setting.

Method

In keeping with the Inquiry based learning (IBL) pedagogical framework structure of the BN at Australian Catholic University, a dedicated process was developed to prepare students theoretically for clinical practice in this specialty area.

This involved:

  • Close collaboration between paediatric academics and clinicians to ensure the theory practice alignment.
  • The development of paediatric acute and community scenarios which were incorporated into an IBL framework.
  • Student directed learning, as IBL is reliant on this teaching & learning strategy, where clear expectations and directions of this process was provided to students to ensure use of an EBP approach to their research of the scenarios.

Results

Incorporating anecdotal clinical experiences as part of the teaching learning process has enhanced the student’s interest in paediatrics, and increased their capacity for achieving the learning outcomes associated with the specialty area.

Conclusions

The health of the child, adolescent and family is fundamental to nursing practice. This nursing specialty is embraced at ACU, through its inclusion in the current BN. The expertise of paediatric clinicians and academics is valued through their collaboration in the development and facilitation of the teaching and learning of this unit.
