The stress system develops during an infant’s early life in relation to the environment. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol is toxic and therefore deleterious for structures and areas in the brain that are centre for concentration, learning, memory, and behaviour. Thus, high levels of cortisol increase the risk for adverse brain development and cognitive impairment. In this presentation, Evalotte will give an overview of stress in children and highlight some of the stressors most children face when admitted to hospital, fear and pain from procedures, and how they can be prevented in order to avoid fear of hospitals and needles.
