Title: Covid-19 Vaccination Training for Indigenous Health Workers in Queensland

Presenter: Karina Baigrie Nurse Educator,
RN RM IPN BNurs, GradDip Midwifery, GradCert Child, Adolescent and Family Health, GradCert Adult & Tertiary Education, GradCert TESOL
Cunningham Centre
Baillie Henderson Hospital, Toowoomba

Abstract:

The Cunningham Centre (Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service) partnered with the First Nations COVID-19 Response Team, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Division (Queensland Health), to develop an education program that facilitated and enabled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners to support the COVID-19 vaccination roll out across Queensland. This training became mandatory for First Nations staff under the Queensland Health Vaccination Training Matrix. The project aimed to improve outcomes for Queensland’s First Nations people by bringing care on or closer to country. The implementation of this project reinforced the valuable role of this workforce and demonstrated that with appropriate support, staff can increase vaccination rates and improve cultural safety and accessibility of our services.

BIO:

Karina Baigrie has been a Nurse Educator at the Cunningham Centre in Toowoomba for seven years specialising in teaching the Immunisation Course for Registered Nurses. Karina commenced her generalist nursing training in 1994 and continued with further studies in midwifery, child health, project management, adult education and TESOL. Karina designed and developed the online training modules and workshops for the First Nations COVID-19 vaccination training. During 2021, she delivered 50 COVID-19 training workshops across the state to over 300 participants and provided one-on-one support to First Nations staff vaccinating in COVID-19 clinics.

Title: Growing Up in Queensland: Living through COVID

Presenter:  Alysse Leicht
Senior Advisor, Engagement & Community Education
Queensland Family & Child Commission

Abstract:

The QFCC has a statutory responsibility to listen to the perspectives of Queensland’s children and young people. To do this, we conduct a biennial Growing Up in Queensland project that invites children and young people to share their experiences of their communities, their hopes and dreams, and the issues that are important to them. To date, these have been conducted in 2018 and 2020; however, the unique and significant circumstances over the last two years presented an opportunity to hear from young people during 2021. Growing Up in Queensland: Living through COVID explores young people’s experiences in Queensland during the COVID-19 pandemic. To read the full report and access the survey snapshot, please head to https://www.qfcc.qld.gov.au/living-through-covid

BIO:

Alysse Leicht is a Senior Advisor in the Engagement and Community Education team at the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC). Her background spans education, research, psychology and community engagement.

Alysse has worked on both the Growing Up in Queensland 2020 and Growing Up in Queensland: Living through COVID iterations of the biennial Growing Up in Queensland child and youth engagement project. Alysse also represents the QFCC on the Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership: COVID Communications for Queensland Families, Children and Young People Network, and is passionate about amplifying the voices of children and young people across Queensland.

Abstract:
“Breaking the rules can have severe legal, ethical and safety implications, and yet we see it as a common behaviour in healthcare. Steps in a process are missed. Policies and guidelines are frequently violated. Yet another Root Cause Analysis reports that if the clinicians had followed the protocol the event would not have occurred.

Why do highly trained professionals cut corners? What are the risks? Could a deeper understanding of the risks and benefits of violations help us to better care for our patients, our colleagues and ourselves? And, maybe, just maybe, understanding this behaviour might guide us toward a future of safer, more efficient and more reliable healthcare.”

This presentation will cover both acute care and prevention programs delivered by the Trauma Service.
Paediatric and Child Health Nurses have something to learn from this presentation as:
Injury is a leading cause of death in those under 45 years. Queensland has the expertise and science to prevent injury, however, “when compared to the Australian average in the period 1994-1998, Queensland had significantly higher mortality rates for injury in the total population, paediatric injury, suicide, motor vehicle crashes and falls in those aged 65 years and over.”
(Queensland Health Information Circular 51 September 2000) cited in a Trauma Plan for Queensland March 2006
