Session Description:

Natural disasters and unusual events like the COVID-19 pandemic create stress and disruption for families. Babies and young children experience this stress, partly by picking up on the emotions of their parents and caregivers. Living through a disruptive event during this critical period can have short- and long-term impacts on a child’s emotional wellbeing and healthy development.

Birdie’s Tree is a suite of resources developed by the multidisciplinary team at Queensland Centre for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health. The resources aim to support mental health and emotional wellbeing for new and expectant parents, babies and young children during all phases of a natural disaster or disruptive event: preparedness, response and recovery. Most of the suite is available free of charge from the QCPIMH website (Google ‘Birdie’s Tree’).

This webinar will give participants practical strategies for using Birdie’s Tree resources with families. It will be particularly useful for health professionals working with parents and young children who do not yet require specialist mental health interventions, but who have experienced negative impacts from one or more natural disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
