Title:
Infant Mental health: Understanding the experience of infants and toddlers in hospital

Abstract of Presentation

Helena will talk about:

  • The experience of infants and young children – what they perceive and are aware of and what their hospital experience can be like.
  • Looking at how much infants can do, what they are capable of and aware of and therefore how they experience hospitalisation, medical procedures etc.
  • Exploring this through the experience of parents, and how this also impacts the infant.
  • Trauma / PTSD / medical trauma in infants, how it presents in hospital and the aftermath – how these hospital experiences / medical complexity or long admission after birth can continue to impact the child and family into the future.
  • What we can do to reduce these risks and support an infant / toddler’s mental health.
  • Some case studies to demonstrate how we can make a difference
