Title: Assessment and management for Tongue Tie in Infants

Abstract:

An initial project was undertaken by the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) Lactation Service, to study infants on the waiting list at the QCH for surgical review of tongue tie (ankyloglossia). The results of this initial study led to a collaboration between the QCH Lactation Service and Children’s Health Queensland, Child Health Service (CHQ CHS). This presentation will provide an overview of the initial phase of the project, including the recommendations and the key activities that have been achieved over the course of the broader collaborative project, including:

  • Implementing the Lingual frenulum protocol for Infants (Martinelli 2015) tool within QCH and the Child Health Service
  • Developing and rolling out a training package for all Child Health Nurses across the CHQ CHS
  • Developing a pathway for the Assessment and Management of a restricted lingual frenulum
  • Strategies to support and embed the clinical practice changes
