Title: Supporting, not reporting: Nurses professional responsibilities for preventing and responding to child abuse

Abstract

Results of the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (2023) showed that more than 40% of children experienced two or more types of abuse/neglect.
Nurses are mandated reporters. But, child protection systems alone cannot meet the needs of all children experiencing abuse.
The National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children (2021-2031) aims for prevention and early support so all children can thrive within their own families, communities, and cultures.
This presentation explores nurses’ professional responsibilities for supporting children who are experiencing abuse, inclusive of prevention, early intervention, responding and reporting.
