Title: Child Health Nurses on the look out for early signs of hyperglycaemia can reduce the metabolic emergency of DKA at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children

Abstract

Too many children experience the metabolic emergency of Diabetes Ketoacidosis at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. DKA is preventable if the early warning signs are recognised. Child and Youth health nurses are well placed to educate parents to recognise the signs of hyperglycaemia and the importance of seeking early medical attention to prevent an emergency at the diagnosis of the most prevalent paediatric disease that is a life long chronic disease.

The DKA project was funded by Clinical Excellence Queensland to reduce the unacceptably high rates of DKA at diagnosis in Queensland Children. The presentation will outline the extent and impact of the problem, the strategies implemented in Queensland by the project and highlight how Child and Youth Health nurses can raise community awareness in the lead up to World Diabetes Day this year on 14th November.
