Title: Organ Donation in Paediatrics.

Abstract

Organ donation in paediatrics is less developed than in adult population.  Mel will discuss Victoria’s Donate Life service, their role in organ donation including the different pathways of donation that are available.  Using a case study Mel will work thru and review the donation process and her role in the hospital to support and education teams about organ donation.

Presenter BIO:

Mel Short
Donation Nurse Specialist, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne

I feel like I have had the world’s luckiest career! I started my career on the Alfred’s respiratory ward caring for patients waiting for and subsequently receiving lung and heart transplants.

I then went on to complete a Graduate Diploma of Intensive Care Nursing within the Intensive Care Unit at the Alfred. From there I worked doing international retrievals, before defecting to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, here I have completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Paediatric Intensive Care and have ALMOST finished my Masters of Advanced Nursing Practice through the University of Melbourne.

I completed a short stint as a donation specialist nursing coordinator at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne before returning home to work as the donation nurse specialist at RCH, an appointment which I have held since 2021.
